Under the old system of two points for a win Liverpool would be top on goal difference as of 11/04/22 and at the other end of the table Everton would be level with Burnley on 20 points rather than 4 points ahead of them.

Agree0 Disagree0

And a pint would cost 74p.

11 Apr 2022 09:56:49
Those were the days Debs.

11 Apr 2022 15:10:12
Maybe Debs was staying at The Ritz with Paul as you could get a pint for under 50p when the points system changed in 1981.

11 Apr 2022 16:14:20
My point is/was all the above points are irrelevant, including mine. it is almost like saying "if my Auntie had b****, she'd be my Uncle"

11 Apr 2022 18:30:58
I don’t think it is irrelevant Debs as it shows that Liverpool are better than is portrayed in the current league standings and Everton are considerably worse than portrayed in the current league standings based on the original method of allocating points as was determined when the football league was founded.
They decided at the outset to give 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw for a reason and over the years most of the rule changes and meddling have not made the game better (IMO).
Are there any rules posters would like to see rescinded and go back to the way it was intended to be played.

The offside law is not fit for purpose.

11 Apr 2022 19:45:33
Are you a Nothampton fan E? Cause that is a load of absolute cobblers! ? It shows absolutely nothing of the sort regarding Everton and Pool, City are top cauee they've won the most games as a league should be! It also shows that the changes to the points system was made when football NEEDED to become more entertaining and it worked.
How far back do you want to go E?! Shall we get our two villages to meet up and spend all day fighting and kicking seven bells out of each other trying to get a pigs bladder to either end of the village?! The problem with football is that it struggles to evolve with the times and the current interpretation of the offside rule just proves it! Instead of asking what you want back it would be a better thread to ask what changes peeps want to see in the future, always look forwards and not back ?

Agree bigcheese, offside now is farcical, also penalties should be awarded not won, eg (sorry to bring it up) woods on Friday. Sportsmanship as gone with players feigning and rolling around. On rule to bring in? No subs in added time,

11 Apr 2022 22:44:10
I think VAR would struggle to sort out that pigs bladder contest.

11 Apr 2022 23:04:55
Penalties should only be given when denying a goalscoring chance rather than as it is now, any foul in the area.

11 Apr 2022 23:25:21
Oh wow I can think of loads of changes:

1) Any decisions that go to VAR should be reviewed by ref on pitchside monitor automatically - the VAR official should have no authority other than to flag up incidents.
2) No VAR decision should be allowed more than 30 seconds - if it's not an obvious error in that time then original decision should stand.
3) Concussion subs should be mandatory and players cannot return to pitch until cleared by an independent medic - anyone caught pressuring the independent medic should be sanctioned (fines and/or bans).
4) Professional fouls to stop players before a real breakaway can occur can be a red card offence.
5) Anyone caught falling over in box without any contact can be red-carded and/or banned retrospectively.
6) Goal celebrations should only be a yellow card offence where they are inciting the fans.
7) There is an existing rule where any substitution adds 30 seconds of added on time - this is not being enforced and should be (it's simple maths if both teams make 3 substitutions that's 3 mins added on before any injuries or time wasting is taken into account) - the fans are being short-changed unless it's Man U!
8) Any manager or other staff member (other than physios/medics treating people) outside the technical area should be booked.
9) Shirt-pulling and wrestling off the ball on corners/free-kicks needs to be penalised with penalties to attacking team or free kicks to defending teams and players booked depending who has instigated it (would soon stop it happening and VAR could assist in identifying main culprits).
10) diving/over acting or pressurising the referee should be penalised with yellow cards for ungentlemanly conduct (again start punishing people and they'll stop doing it).

Good calls Wolflea. I'd add to that:

- Each captain can contest 1 decision per game to VAR.
- A second yellow card offense should be checked just like a straight red to make sure the correct outcome is achieved, as it has the same impact on the game.
- Common sense should be applied to the handball rule and the rule is enforced from the upper arm and not from the shoulder as some referees seem to struggle with
- After a match the referee should have to justify any poor decisions they made.
- If a manager calls out a referee the decision should be talked about constructively. If the referee is at fault the manager should not get fined for complaining and the referee should face a consequence such as additional training. a manager should only be fined if they use unacceptable language to voice their opinion.

Not rule related but I would like to see the Cup Winners Cup re-introduced even if early round losers drop into the Conference and Europa Leagues.

12 Apr 2022 12:13:11
Actually I'd like it to be as it was! Kick off 3pm Saturday 10 mins half time and finished and back in the pub by ten to five talking about the ref! (Only usually if we'd lost).

12 Apr 2022 13:42:42
Ken yes the lack of 3.00 kick offs, no standing and booking expensive tickets that price many out of the game are all things I would like to see addressed.

12 Apr 2022 13:49:26
Ken would that have been the Feathers pub used to go there back in the day

12 Apr 2022 16:33:44
Buxton. Yes it would!

12 Apr 2022 21:27:52
Ah the feathers, use to have a couple or so before the game in there,

13 Apr 2022 17:01:58
Great ideas gents, I especially like the changes around pens and red cards as they are currently game killing.
For my two pence the main rule I don't want to see instigated is today's announcement of the changes to UEFA qualification which is basically a different form of the Supe League just in a different guise! No sporting merit just a financial protection for the comp and teams regularly in it! It's a disgrace to even think that if Chelsea have a bad season and finish 5th they get a better reward than say WHU having a great season and ALSO finishing fifth! I'm sorry gents but if this goes a head its just a further sign of how broken the competitive element of the game had become. For me personally I think these changes really could tip me past the point of having any kind of respect for a game I once loved. These changes would represent a sport that has lost all genuine senses of a fair competition, it's grotesque in the extreme! ?

Northampton should get an automatic place in the Champions League and let the rest of them fight it out Bully’s .

13 Apr 2022 22:32:07
You beat me to it Bullys. Logged on to say just about the same as you have but much better than I would have. My initial reaction was what is the point anymore? After my anger has subsided I will hopefully have calmed down and have a clearer head.
