Traore to Villa seems to be the wind up of the night over on Twitter. It’s hard enough to sleep with this heat as it is…

20 Jul 2022 17:32:17
But why would we need him?! I mean what happened to the 'two South Americans' that multiple posters told us two weeks ago were going to be announced any day?! In fact I'm pretty sure it was those two and a striker?! Not one mentioned Nathan or even a cb now did they?! These 'contacts' seem about as reliable as DHL! ?
Sorry I couldn't resist ?

20 Jul 2022 18:41:41
BB that's harsh on DHL I get an email nearly every day telling me they have a parcel for me, all I need to do is send my bank details! Then they'll deliver the strikers I've bought for Wolves! ?

21 Jul 2022 12:23:13
Truth is bully, nobody other than those in the club's transfer team knows who is being signed.

21 Jul 2022 18:05:41
Agreed. Love another creative midfielder. Two speedy jotaesque forwards and a striker though.
Our attack is still to predictable.

21 Jul 2022 18:17:35
I agree Big, been saying the same thing myself all along!
Well now I'm properly confused, sky saying we're in for an Austrian CB named Posch?! Another CB can only mean one of two things a) we are sticking with three at the back or b) someone is off (if I was a betting man I reckon it may be Boly)? Thoughts gents?

21 Jul 2022 18:48:39
Yes Collins, Boly and Stefan Posch all as right sided, right footed centre backs so this rumour is either not true or Boly is looking at going IMO.

21 Jul 2022 19:05:12
BB - If we are signing another CB then I agree it is probable that one is leaving and you would assume it is Boly.
However we surely need to be signing a CF and possibly even a CM before another CD as CD is not an area that is that concerning with Kilman and Collins an interesting looking 2 and Coady plus the 2 a solid sounding 3.
Re CM If we are playing a 2 then Coady might be an option as a DCM or in a more attacking formation MGW/Podence could play as an ACM but at the moment we seem to be running it back with Neves and Moutinho with Dendonker as cover/3rd member of the mid- somewhat worrying?
But far more worryingly at CF its Jimenez or in truth not playing a CF - not totally crazy note Liverpool, City and Chelsea all played long spells last year without a traditonal CF but a little radical after the last few years of very conventional line ups.

21 Jul 2022 20:06:11
Future- good points as always buddy, have been reading a lot about how Lages 4-4-2 could become a 4-3-3 with us (cause of the inside forwards we have) and I think you might be right there on how it works. It's actually not a bad shout because Raul's position becomes more of a Frimino role and thus about faciliting goals (for Neto and Podence) as much as it is scoring um. He may not be scoring but his hold up and lay off game is still good.
I agree with your premise that a CF should be the priority but this could just be 'the nature of the beast'. We all know how hard it is to get a quality cf to commit so it's possible we have found one (Barbosa's been tied a few times and I'd be very happy with him) but as always with good forwards maybe they want to keep their options open till later in the window? Whereas it's entirely possible a club has offered (just as an example) £10m for Boly and the club are seeing it as a chance to replace him while they can still get a fee? Look at Burnley if they could convince him to drop down they have cash to spare and an entire defence to replace (he'd be a great place to start when building a new Champ defence)! Or the Posch rumour could just be nonsense, all I will say is that our rumours very rarely appear on sky so make of that what you will. definitely going to be an interesting window ?

21 Jul 2022 22:56:40
BB - good call on Burnley (literally a new defence with Mee, Tarkowski and Collins at least gone) but I would fall off my chair if they or anyone offered £10m (or anything close to it) and sincerely hope we would rip their arm off if they did.
Sadly - unless the summer off has significantly impacted on his fitness in a positive way and he has (re)gained a couple of yards of pace - I think he is done at the top level and Champ sides or equivalent rarely pay that sort of money let alone for a guy apparently on his last legs despite only being 31.
Re Firmino did I write that a couple of weeks ago on here? Just checked and I did in an exchange with Arddunby but had MGW in that role - the false 9 linking with 2 fast forwrds Neto and, for me, Traore as Salah and Mane - but you are as usual spot on Jimenez could play that role too - and hopefully pop in a few goals as well. (not sure how we fit MGW in then though?)
Re recruiting in general you are obviously correct. Indeed we suffer from the same problem many sides outside of London, the top 6 or those willing to splash stupid cash on wages/fees (hi NF!) do, in that its v hard to buy players who are good enough to play unless you guarentee that they will play - why sit on a bench for modest money in (with all respect ) Wolverhampton when you can do the same at a big 6 (medals/Europe) or London side (nicer shops/restaurants/theatre etc - basically the lifestyle guys!) or be paid stupid money by certain clubs to do the same.
It is all very well moaning about not getting options to Neves/Moutinho {I know I do} but who that is good enough to challenge let alone oust one of them would come to Wolves - particularly now we can't offer Europe or big fees/wages.
Note Nunes now heavily linked to Liverpool!
I guess many potential CF signings might feel the same about Jimenez who (outside of some on here) still seems to be v highly regarded.
PS Phil Lingard to NF - Wow!" How does his ex Man U hotshot with multiple England caps attitude on 200k a week go down in the dressing room where last season everyone was a champ player on champ wages. A statement of intent by NF but makes me think you could be right about him character wise - surely his move indicates money not football is his main driver and we don't want those!

22 Jul 2022 01:13:03
As always Future I agree with what your saying. Regarding the possible fee for Boly I accept that's very much best case scenario thinking, although I would say that he is still a top player on his day, sadly that now happens a few times a season! Your right though (as per:) he's lost a yard or two and he didn't have any to spare, I love the guy but he's looking Champ level these days. Which is why ya never know, if he stays fit he's worth at least £8m to a club like Burnley but as you say I'd take their hand off!
As for MGW he plays Inside forward for England and does well, I think it's more about the minutes than the role at this early stage to be honest.
I also agree with your point, I've said it before that the biggest problem we have when replacing Moutinho and/or Neves ironically IS that we HAVE Moutinho and Neves! Not complaining, what a lucky position that is to be in (at time of writing:)! What a lovely problem, that with them being the best midfield pair I've seen in my lifetime in the old gold, in reality to replace either one of them ain't cheap or easy! Again we have to laugh at the irony that it would seem like we could have done it this time last year for just £20m (plaee see Vittinha) but in true Wolves style we never know what we had till its gone (please see probs soon to be Adama:)!
Also agree with both your points on Lingard. He said he was all about the playing time/ambition then traded playing in Europe for WHU for scraping the relegation battle with NF! I'm sure he'll say its all about the club when we all know with footballers these days wages are king! ?
COYW ??

22 Jul 2022 10:03:04
The plain fact of the matter is it is Forest who are demonstrating ambition while we continue to stagnate. Two weeks to go before the season starts and we have made one purchase; arguably the worst summer transfer window since McCarthy's last season in charge. Where are the multiple signings that some posters on here said were incoming? Even the clickbait sites have now dried up with suggestions!

22 Jul 2022 10:43:53
Time will tell SQ.
The goals for need to be addressed whether an incomig striker or not we need to finish off our chances created much much more.

Lingard £200,000 a week can't see forest paying him that much but clearly it's going to be a lot to lure him there.
This could be a huge mistake for forset a huge gamble imo.
There seems to be positive potential with Neto and MGW.
As say time will tell,2 weeks tomorrow, its not long now.
Hear Leeds have some injuries and have sold key players.
An advantage for us is that we have virtually same squad/team bar saiss and marcal where as Leeds have a fair few to integrate into their team /squad.

22 Jul 2022 10:55:35
SQ- every year around now we have this debate fella and I ALWAYS say the same thing! Judge the window at the end of the window, happy to discuss it then and if your underwhelmed then fair enough but right now we don't know where we will be. As for Forest showing ambition, is giving one player £115k a week on a one year deal (with no option I might add) REALLY ambitious?! I would argue that signing Champs leagues players whilst in the Champ was more so?! Let's see how it works out for them shall we, Fulham spent over £100m when they came up last time where did they finish again? So c'mon then SQ, if Forest are being more ambitious are you willing to say you think they will finish above us then? Cause surely with all their ambition and backing they should do right?!

22 Jul 2022 11:08:44
Surely Forest could pay a large signing on Fee if Lingard is a free agent, but yes I can't see them paying 200k per week either. Even a 3 year deal at 50k per week and a 45 million signing on fee would be huge for a player of his age on a free to a promoted club.

22 Jul 2022 11:10:42
Sorry figures should have been 22.5 million signing on fee! Somehow managed to double the total. that's a little more affordable.

22 Jul 2022 11:46:32
Arddunby - £200k a week for 3 years is £31.2m. £22.5m up front an 50k a week over 3 years is £30.3m.
Allowing for the time value of money - in the latter deal you pay out most of the cash on day 1 rather than over the 3 years the two are virtually identical.
This merely shows how valuable free agents are - they are so affordable that even Forest can pay incredible wages.
Hence my comments on Lingard and Mee - Wolves may have no cash to buy players ( we don't know but that seems to be the assumption) but our wage bill will have been sharply reduced by the exits so far this summer so paying free agents good wages should be easy. Hence whilst I understand the reticence on Lingard (vis a vis dressing room etc) I am affled that we have let Mee and Tarkowski for example join of our lower mid table rivals on frees!
Not sure on his fitness and attitude/wage demands but i'd also have looked at Juan Mata.
Perhaps that might have stunted MGW's growth though?
PS frightrened that I (and others?) am becoming too invested in MGW as a saviour with no real evidence beyond 2 good loans in the champ to support it?
Thoughts?

22 Jul 2022 13:04:17
Future, yes I was quickly approximately based on 50 weeks per year! I'm Generally not thinking straight this morning. It does look like the transfer budget is limited until someone is sold. I suspect we'll only consider free agents when the window closes in the hope we can sign players at lower salary levels. Obviously the best will be gone by September.

22 Jul 2022 13:38:13
At the moment - if the window shut today my overall view is that we have just about stood still - which is a lot better than might have been the case
GK - Sa plus backup is absolutely fine
WB/FB -Semedo, Otto and RAN - the latter two should be better than last year - return from injury and experience respectively. 4th option I thought would be Giles or Bolla but 4th option not that important
CD -Collins replaces Saiss. Kilman better due to experience Boly and perhaps Coady on downslope. Yerson Gomes and Marques still raw.
CM - thin still and older but MGW back so maybe some upside
WF - Neto back, Trincao replaced by Traore huge uplift. Thin as the young Portugues lad was going to be 4th option
CF - v thin and Jimenez on downslope

Net net square?
Not great but whilst some Spurs,vArsenal and WH have gone forwards, others like Everton, Brighton and Leeds have prob actually gone backwards
Since we no longer compete with Arsenal, WH or Spurs but do with Leeds, Brighton and Everton this situation could be a lot lot worse!

22 Jul 2022 14:29:58
Thefutureisoldgold my thoughts regarding MGW,
Last years pre season MGW was the inform player for us central to lages plans it was a surprise he was loaned of for the season to Sheffield utd.
A year on and pre season at present the reports are good again as last year but having that excellent season at Sheffield United catapulting him to a sought after player from other teams in our league says to me to have over 90% belief he will bloom for us.
If he builds up an understanding with Neto all the better.
But sure reading and respecting other posters who don't have the belief he will be excellent for us aids to the upto 10% I have of concern or worry my belief is in vain.

Regarding free agents mee tarwoski mata look like they're not in the ethos of players for our club. (too old imo and not for the long term also no sell on value)
Lingard as you remembered my thoughts from a while back.

22 Jul 2022 14:40:06
Ps,
Our first game at Leeds will be payback.
We threw away 5 points agaisnt them last season.
Way way we were light years better than them.
I'm hoping this will be in the teams mind and the first match we fly out the traps and put them to the sword.
At present we have Neto jiminez MGW Traore podence Whang they all can't be in the starting 11.
We are imo a way lot better than we showed last season.
And with the creases ironed out we will well I'm hoping we will be fine.

22 Jul 2022 20:03:54
Phil - superb post both on MGW and the free agents. You are completely correct in your analysis of free agents and I strongly suspect the club agrees with you!
I guess where I am coming from is not - despite my moniker - the future but today. The squad is v thin and some cheap short term stop gaps - albeit with no chance of improvement or sell on - would be a good thing and maybe if we get an injury or two might with the benefit of hindsight have been essential - let's hope not!.
Its a lovely idea/strategy (albeit v high risk - see Fabio/Hoever/Trincao etc etc etc!) to buy players who will improve and become great bargains with sell on potential. However if we don't protect the present those players that actually prove to be as good we hope (and remember lots if not most young players, (not just those bought by us but in the game in general) with potential don't turn out to be good enough!) will not stay with us anyway!
Guess I am a bear looking at downside risk and the club is a bull looking at upside - as with everything there is a balance of young "for the future" squad players and "oven ready to step in" squad players and for me ( but not the club obviously ) we are slightly the wrong side of that!

22 Jul 2022 20:38:19
Great reply mate I understand where you coming from.
I think we possibly maybe light at wing backs midfield okish a striker to score 15/20 goals
The end of last season understandably is clear we run out of options.
Saying that what gives me more optimism is the points we lost when we were the better team.
Up top as it's a new season there is fresh hope for our attacking players to hit the back of the net.
I'm sure the club will do their upmost to get the players in to improve us but realise I do it's no certainty it will happen.
So for now going on our current squad a striker/poacher/fox in the box is what we want to see.
Fabio out on loan and Trincao gone the minutes they both played last season this coming season these minutes will be played from someone else therefore that's going to be an improvement most likely for our team.
More game time for podence traore whang Neto if they all are with us.
Pros and cons always.
We've had some long term injuries to key players but hasn't ruined us.
If the squad stays relatively injury free then we can be some force imo.

22 Jul 2022 20:55:02
Phil - ironically just seen this article - somewhat proving my point!

23 Jul 2022 10:42:06
I pressed on the link you put on Thefutureisoldgold but kept coming up page unavailable.
Nevertheless I understand your point and see it as fair and valid.
Lol I'm still a spring chicken in some respects to my outlook as you and other elders on here.
Respect to you and all as always.

23 Jul 2022 11:28:44
Sorry phil - it was an article from the Guardian looking back at their top 20 English youngsters of 2008 and how they had actually done.
Some I couldn't even remember, others had enjoyed v modest succcess, plying their trade in the lower leagues - note most should still be playing - its only 14 years ago so these guys will be in their early to mid 30s - and sadly only a handful had become genuine Prem league players and only Jack Wishere had become a star!
The point is that the idea is great but in reality it doesn't work - maybe Southampton got it right for a while but even they ended up getting relegated and Crewe had a great record for a number of years - but in the lower leagues. It is also an expensive way to to do it as well - not only the cost of buying and trainning all these youngsters adds up but the loss of revenue as a result of the lower league position and the lack of European football more than wipes out any profits you may make on the handful that do come good.
Hence i'd buy fewer but more "guaranteed" options and accept that I may need to buy free agents on higher wages to make it work- of course others, (including perhaps the club) will think differently and believe that we have the talent spotters/developers to get it right where so many others have failed.
