Transfers: why haven't Wolves started buying? Not sure, maybe Wolves need to sell first. Which, to me, is a bit confusing. In Jan transfer window Wolves sold 3 players for 80mill. Agbadou, JLS and Arias.
They then spent 7mill on Armstrong, so that leaves 73mill, plus 49mill parachute payment this season. So maybe Cesar wants to have a look to see who wants to go and who wants to stay. I could be wrong. Any ideas.

Because there is a World Cup on. Unless we want to spend 130m on players like Anderson to Coty, not many others are buying yet. We have brought two great people in. Jackson was having talks with the new gaffer, and I'm sure we will start to see movement next week, hopefully.

We have seven weeks to build a team with a new head coach who has no Championship experience. Seven weeks. All of the season tickets are sold and now the club is reverting to type. Those expecting us to hit the ground running and to be challenging at the top end of the table may need to think again.
25 Jun 2026 12:18:23
Our first game is Blackburn home, then second is Preston Away.

I remember Blackburn at home, last match of season, relegation decider, May 2011, I think. Either one of us could have gone down instead of Birmingham. Then news came through that Birmingham were losing at Spurs, and the players at the Mol were getting signals from the managers to the effect that a draw would save us both.
We started to pat the ball to Blackburn and back. Ref got incensed, and threatened to call the match off as nobody was trying to win or lose! Not surprisingly, the match ended in a draw and we both survived. At least that's how I remember it. A dodgy result though.

I was at that game as well, Deep. It was only the last 15-20mins when they actually started just passing it about. I vividly remember Steve Kean screaming at both teams to just sit on the draw! Happy days indeed. 👍

Hardly a stampede for our summer signin……. Same old?

I've heard it's reported that the whole program is being held up because of the delays in the sale of just one player, Joao Gomes. Why would that be the case if true?

24 Jun 2026 21:57:07
I suspect Long, because it's hard to spend money that we don't actually have. I think the Gomes money was likely earmarked for contributing towards Cesar's transfer budget. The cynic in me also wonders if this is why we have suddenly put a low price tag on Mane.
Let's be honest, we don't have a lot of assets worth big money. With Andre tied down, that pretty much leaves Gomes and Mane.

Absolutely Bully's, I suspected our new CEO may want to rescue Wolves from the downward spiral, but everything will have to be funded by the Club, as I doubt Fosun's requirement for Wolves to be self financing remains unchanged. As for Mane, the fact he's been priced to sell confirms this, imo.
As I've posted before, my concerns are that building a team to get promoted is one thing. But what happens then? If Fosun hasn't changed their ways, that's when we'll see it. In which case, it will be a case of 'ok lads back on your heads' and get ready for more struggles in the Prem, or worse.

BB, as usual, a sensible post grounded in reality.
I think posters need to smell the coffee, and realise that a few free transfers, ironically of players who are markedly better than the players currently at the club, are not "below" the club now.
Stability is required after several years of self-induced catastrophic collapse, and a few high quality (if old) pros will bring that in the short term. Without them, Wolves could easily be looking to rebuild from Div 1 next summer
I love the optimism of some, but it's going to be a long and painful summer trying to exit the various overpriced, over-paid, but not very good players that currently fill the squad and replace them with substantially (wages and amort) cheaper, but better players!
With the new SCR coming into effect this year, Wolves simply have to exit a number of them, albeit it will be at not insignificant losses that, ironically, are no longer going to be relevant with the demise of PSR.

It's that time of year again, where all the speculation abounds again. tfig, with all his sermons on finances, if you're that good, mate, why aren't you CEO of finances for Fosun? Who knows where the club would be with your expertise.
As for signings, maybe the targets are enjoying a break and pondering their decisions. Let's wait and see before knocking what is or what isn't being done.

The market is always slow outside the big 6 when a World Cup is on. It might be more stagnant at the moment, with extra players involved. 42 squads of 25 players each are a lot of footballers.
We will still need to sell to bring players in, though.
The only thing the owners could fund is infrastructure, otherwise the club have to be sustainable with the playing squad whether the owners want to or not.

I think the fact players are on holidays and at the World Cup might be affecting things. Also, the transfer plan will have changed now there is a manager change.
Personally, I don't think it matters, as I don't think the new manager has the experience or ability for the Championship.
I just have the feeling the cycle is going to continue, and we will have a new manager by New Year.

Give the guy a chance. There's not a ball been kicked in anger yet, and he's being written off. Look what Brighton and Bournemouth did with unknown managers.
24 Jun 2026 11:13:38
Fosun have reportedly put a prove tag of 30 Mil on Mateus Mane.
Thoughts?
1
24 Jun 2026 12:13:54
Even though he's very young, that does leave the door ajar a bit for a sale, imo.

24 Jun 2026 15:30:56
Needs to be double that, but I would keep him, get an experienced midfielder in, and let him learn from him and Raul.
3
24 Jun 2026 15:39:43
Will they never learn!!

24 Jun 2026 19:11:23
Agree, Phimans, but only ££££'s register with Fosun, whether Jeff or Nathan... Same objective, change the name, game's the same, nothing changes.

Blackbirds, Simple answer... No.

He is not in the new manager's plans. He probably wants out, thinking he will be replaced.
24 Jun 2026 10:45:06
Having watched the England game last night.
I think Wolves should play them in a friendly. We have a good chance of winning.
What a shambles.

24 Jun 2026 12:12:47
It was pretty dire, Moby. Wingers that won't take a man on one to one, poor crossing of the ball, and the old constant pass back and across the pitch malarkey.
On another depressing note, 4/5 ex Wolves players playing in the Portuguese team in their demolition of Uzbekistan.
Let's hope by the next World Cup it's not the other way round.

24 Jun 2026 13:28:35
If you play Anthony Gordon and Reece James, what do you expect?
3
24 Jun 2026 15:40:52
Nice bait, Moby, but having endured all last season I'm not falling for it!

24 Jun 2026 16:56:19
I'm not a fan of Reece James or Konsa.
tbh.
Saka surely got to play before Manduake.
Plus Bellingham has not really shone yet.
So maybe play Rogers.
And Rashford in place of Gordon.

Pickford frightens me - Accident waiting to happen!
2
24 Jun 2026 19:08:40
Pickford should have been sent off. He knew what he was doing, but VAR didn't look. Konsa gives away a definite pen, and again it was not given. FIFA have apologised & there's an investigation into both those decisions and a few more. As it stands, we get off lightly.
24 Jun 2026 10:23:18
Relieved that I won’t be seeing VAR in the Championship next season. England vs Ghana last night saw VAR sink to new depths. Absolute stonewall penalty not even reviewed. What excuse will be given? Until humans are removed from the decision making, VAR will continue so be the worst thing ever s*** into civilisation.
It’s almost as bad as the ‘hydration’ breaks.
The older I get, the more cynical I get, the more I hate football. One certainty: the Yanks won’t stop until they’ve ruined the Premier League.
13
24 Jun 2026 13:30:33
See, we have had to change plans with the pre-season friendly to satisfy the arrogance in Erdington.
1
25 Jun 2026 08:35:51
Are those 'Hydration Breaks' just an excuse for the yanks to have some TV advertising time? That's how thing normally work over there. I was watching baseball on TV when I was in Oregon a few years ago, never been as bored in my life (even watching wolves sometimes).

{Ed001's Note - yes.}

25 Jun 2026 14:53:05
Nothing to do with hydration, all about advertising, they can make a million dollars out of every break. It's common knowledge in the US.
1
25 Jun 2026 17:12:31
The Powerade Hydration Break was the clue, and Infantino had the nerve to say it wasn't a commercial decision.
24 Jun 2026 01:52:49
Ipswich Town have appointed Gary O'Neil ahead of their return to the Premier League.
What are you doing?!
2
24 Jun 2026 06:08:20
If Gary O'Neil does well at Ipswich, it will just add more credence that Jeff Shi was holding us back and really was more incompetent than we all first thought.
6
24 Jun 2026 10:54:07
I wish Gary all the best at Ipswich. When he was at Wolves, he had supreme talents such as Cunha and Neto, etc., in the team, but was still ultimately found wanting. He never really recovered from that cup loss against Coventry, so it wasn't totally down to that plonker Jeff. Gary will learn from his experience at Wolves.
23 Jun 2026 13:16:20
So if Madrid now don’t want to pay the money for Gomes, could we get him to stay for one more year? Galatasaray are sniffing around but he could do better than them. Yes, European football on offer but the champ is still better than most of the Super Lig.
4
23 Jun 2026 16:21:41
VB problem is, if Gomes stays, Wolves have 2 defensive mfs with no goals. Andre, 1 goal; Gomes, I think, 7. No creativity, no goals, that was the problem. Wolves need a creative mf who can score goals.
3
23 Jun 2026 20:41:01
Wolves should loan him out for a year. Let's see how sincere he is if Wolves make that offer.
1
24 Jun 2026 10:33:58
It is a nice idea, Handsome, but (sadly) also probs not that simple. It has been pretty clear for months now that selling Gomes is part of the long-term plan, as he is one of the only assets we have that should have gone up in value. So, whilst I'd love to keep him, I fully suspect that cashing in on him was part of the plan when we tied down Andre. Our finances are not good, so I think we will need to find a buyer for him and half the others ASAP! Speaking of, it's nice to see we are keeping Lima, as that also means Jackson is on his way.
He was never the right signing, and is a clear example of the problems we had under Jeff Shi. It's essentially what happens when you don't secure the manager's first, second, or even third choice for a position!
1
24 Jun 2026 11:22:18
You know we don't have to play them both at the same time, right? And we could play 3 in midfield, like in a 4-3-3...
So, the problem was Jeff, Vitor, Gary, Rob...
and now it's Andre and Gomes? And here I was thinking it was our shocking defence, that seemed headless at times, and a lack of a striker that hurt us... not our best 2 players.
3
24 Jun 2026 12:06:57
Do you honestly think that Andre and Gomes would stay in a Champ team whilst being happy with rotating?! Absolutely no chance, and neither should they be; for that matter, as a club, we also shouldn't be justifying that level of wage spend unless both players are going to be starting the bulk of our Champ matches.
I don't actually think the tactical side of it would be a problem, as I think together they would dominate midfield enough in the Champ that it wouldn't really matter. I suspect the more realistic problem, as said, will be the balance sheets. Ours don't look good right now!

If it is purely cash not profits that Fosun/Wolves need - and with SCR replacing PSR profits are no longer measured - then Wolves might be able to raise more than enough to fund the rebuild, if that is the only reason Wolves need cash, by
1) selling - albeit at a loss or for modest sums relative to the amounts they were purchased for - all the non required players such as Jackson, Hoever, Santi and Hugo Bueno, Toti, Doyle, Traore, Munetsi, Fer Lopez, Hwang, Sa, Johnstone, Djiga, JRB, Sasa etc etc.
2) Buying on frees a spine of experienced pros and supplementing it with a number of loans and young prospects bought for modest sums - not the £15m + figures some seem to believe Wolves will be spending.
This would enable Wolves to retain the 3 players worth substantial sums, Krejci, Mane and Gomes J (assuming of course that they are willing to stay).
A team of say Pope, Trippier, Yerson, Mings, Krejci, Wolfe, Andre, Gomes, Mane, Armstrong, Raul would be highly competitive.
The bench would be made up of further frees, a few Wolves youngsters (Lima, Gomes R, Tolu, etc), some youngsters brought in and maybe a couple of loans.
I strongly suspect, however, that a number of the players I want to keep want out and Wolves probably need the money to pay "other" bills in addition to the rebuild, and so not enough can be raised by selling off the "unwanted" I listed.
