I've been reading this site for years but never posted!
There seems to be two major talking points currently;
1. Who of the dozens of players rumoured are we going to sign?
2. Will we get relegated this season due to a weakened squad?
We actually have a full complement of 17 foreign players and therefore will realistically only see signings if sales are made.
I may be wrong but I believe the squad is, at least numerically, the same as last season with outgoings; Djiga, Semedo, Ait Nouri, Traore, Sarabia, Guedes, Cunha being replaced by; Mosquera, Hoever, Wolfe, H Bueno, R Gomes, Silva, Arias.

Are you only allowed a certain number of foreign players? I’ve read before about “homegrown” players as well but don’t understand it tbh.

Welcome molineuxway, you've forgotten Fer Lopez mate, Hugo bueno, hoever, rigardo, mosqu, we're ours anyway, either back from loan or injured. Fabio is on his way.
We've brought in 3 (4 if you count larsens confirmed) so far, Lima may also be going on loan.
We are actually lower in numbers now as it stands.

I think Fer Lopez qualifies as U21 this season. I know they were our players but if they are to play this season they all have to be registered. Pretty sure it's 17 overseas and up to 8 home grown players, our current squad is:

Homegrown;
Johnstone
Bentley
King
Doherty

Overseas;
Sa
Agbadou
Mosquera
Toti
S Bueno
Hoever
Wolfe
H Bueno
Andre
J Gomes
Munetsi
R Gomes
Hwang
Silva
Arias
Bellegarde
JSL
Unless anyone is sold or loaned out and replaced I think that's a full squad registration

In reply to the many doom-laden, worst-case scenario posts:

1. VP is a good coach, in fact a very good coach.
2. We will not get relegated.
3. I expect a mid-table finish.
4. We will sign more players before the window is out.

As I've said before Matt Doherty does not qualify as Home grown, ironically however Hector Bueno is! In fact Buneo I belive is even more valuable as he's homegrown to the actual club! Just food for thought ?

Deep- answer me this, do you think the current squad is better than last seasons or worst than last season? Cause I'm sorry fella but what metric are you using exactly to call a mid table finish for a team that's looked beyond woeful all pre season? Genuinely interested as I feel like I need some of your optimism right now buddy! ??

Deep. dream on unless we get someone who can score 15 goals and at least 3 or 4 more players the writing is on the wall.

On what I'm sure we will all take as a positive. When reading NewsNow this morning Wolves have extended their partnership with Drayton Manor Resort. I'm sure that news will have us sleeping well as we approach the new season. It's good that they can take time off searching for players to sort out the important things like this!
Frankly I'm overwhelmed by this important news.

Regarding the lack of squad depth there must be some confidence that more signings are imminent or why would they have sanctioned so many loans.

Doherty was registered as HG in last seasons squad, Doyle is also HG so they really didn't rate him!
Bueno frees up a spot though.

Opta super computer has predicted we'll finish 17th. Hope Fosun don't read that article or that's our lot regarding any new acquisitions.

Bully, at this moment in time last season's squad was better, but we knew we would lose some of them. We have a while yet to improve the squad. This season's coach is far, far better than Gary a year ago and knows what he is doing. Had he been in charge for the whole of last season we would probably have finished midtable. Preseason is not much of a guide.

I get what you saying Derry but we do have previous here. The club said this time last season that had we actually replaced Kilman (so bought Agbadou) at the start of the season (like we should have) that they would have sanctioned the loan of Santi Bueno which would have left us with ONE cb as cover!

As we found out with Mosquera injury that decision (both not replacing Kilman or potentially loaning out Bueno) was nothing short of absolute madness! In short, at this stage (sadly) I don't trust the club when it comes to truly understanding what squad depth actually means! ?

What do you mean 'registered as' it has absolutely nothing to do with how you register someone and comes down to them spendimg three (continuous) years playing in a home grown league between the age of 18-21. So I'm afraid Matt Doherty does not qualify from what I can tell anyway, happy to be wrong though?

Ken68 I am indeed overjoyed at the Drayton Park deal, it could have been awkward to find out we'd joined up with Disney land paris and taken our foreign based fun rides over the allocated number and get deducted visits.
Oh its all a rollercoaster ride leading up to the new season.

Not sure about that Deep, Gary is given a rough ride on here as peeps seem to forget that he had to spend the first half of the season without a PROPER defence! Like those before him he was sold down the river by a woeful lack of recruitment. To sell Kilman and not replace him until Jan was truly criminal! Both Agbadou and Munetsi played most games after arriving and that's not a coincidence! Have we learnt our lesson? Time will tell but as things stand today I would say absutely not! I do hope I'm wrong mind! ?

Didn't we sign Matt Doherty in 2010 when he was 18? That means he was with us for ghe necessary 3 years before he was 21. Also, as well as Hugo Bueno, Ki-Jana Hooever is also classed as home grown. He was with Liverpool from the age of 16 or 17.

18.) 06 Aug 2025
06 Aug 2025 16:59:09
We did sign him at 18 East but then at 20 we let him go on holiday to Hibbs. As the Scottish league doesn't count as homegrown that would mean he has not done three continual years in a homegrown league between 18-21 ?

19.) 06 Aug 2025
06 Aug 2025 17:34:16
Not sure that makes a difference as from what I've read, its where the club that own a player resides rather than where the player is actualy. Also on the 'Premier Leauge's website I found a handy list of the 2022-23 squad that included asterisks indicating home grown players. And there was one next to Matt Doherty's name.

Bully, Gary seemed to lose all confidence and authority after that major FA Cup defeat to Coventry the prior season. He was finished before he even started last season, which of course was a disaster until he was sacked. I realise Kilman wasn't replaced but Gary couldn't handle the Coventry setback going forward. Rough ride? No, he was finished, done, all confidence gone.

Again Deep two different convos, besides which no one was saying that this time last year when England, Liverpool and Chelsea were tied with him now we're they?!
The point your missing is that when comparing his job to VPs it's comparing apples and pears, one of them was backed and the other was (yet again) given half a deck of cards and told to still come up with a good hand! How many other clubs in this league sell off their club Captain and most used player from the season before and don't spend a penny to replace him with another player then expect the club to perform! Like I say it was criminal!

East-interesting, actually it does completely matter where they play (rather than simply reside). But you are in fact correct he is home grown in the league but not in Europe comps. Because in the league it does not have to be three continual seasons (just three before 21) whereas to qualify as Euro homegrown it needs to be three continuous seasons ?
