Why we let Fabio Silva go in loan was puzzling, clearly a talent with a great attitude and now playing some great football away from Wolves.Has to come back close season as part of rebuild. We will stay up but it's a close one that will have us sweating for a few more games.

There was an interview with Fabio not too long ago. I believe his dad engineered the loan move to Anderlecht so he would get more game time and then when that wasn't working out as well as expected, they organised the move to PSV. Wolves didn't really want to loan him out at the time but used it to get Fabio to sign an additional year contract extension.

PSV wanted to sign FS for 18 months, this wasn't allowed, they're looking to extend his loan move for another season. This came from a recent interview with Ruud Van Nistelrooy (spelling).

Part of the issue is Financial Fair Play. Not just because of what Wolves have had to deal with the past couple of years, but the rules in general. Wolves can only generate a certain amount of revenue by standard means (gate receipts, merch sales, prize money) and in comparison to other clubs there is a huge gap. A way to fill the gap is generating revenue by transfers. Better players even on free transfers require bigger wages.
To keep the maths simple for me as I'm bad at it, if you sign 3 players at £10 million each and then sell each player for £30 million each, you effectively have another £60 million you wouldn't have had for a later transfer budget. You can either buy youngsters of a higher standard to begin with, or invest in the first team.
Before Wolves can be a "top" team they have to improve revenue generation regardless of who owns the club, so being a trading club is a good way to do it but you have to be patient and hope more players work out than not in terms of making a profit on them.
Unfortunately the route teams like Chelsea and City took has been closed off since they spent the money they did. All the board can do now is invest in infrastructure like the stadium, which will hopefully happen soon but economic and council issues are affecting the business viability of it right now.

Another income generator Alex is sponsorship, something that one of the teams you mention used to great effect.
Wolves, City and Chelsea were all similar sized clubs, but the latter two have and continue to receive massive sums of money from well, where exactly.
FFP was supposed to stop clubs from outspending their income to control losses, irrespective of the wealth of their owners. The club has to be a standalone viable financial institution within certain parameters. Ok I get that Chelsea built their squads pre FFP and winning stuff since helps their income stream, but City?
If Newcastle do the same as City then we all know that either FFP is a joke or it is simply used by some as an excuse not to spend.

True LongmyndWolf. I think sponsorship is something we have to be better with. What helped City and Chelsea was they had signed big named players to be more attractive to sponsorships, although I think in City's case the owners are related to or own their sponsor.
I'm interested to see what happens with Newcastle. We know they have a bigger stadium which will give them some extra cash, but beyond that we need to wait and see probably for at least 3 years as I believe the losses are looked at over 3 years.
We already know that FFP is a joke, otherwise how could Barcelona carry the level of debt they do without being in breach? We also know City have been investigated, found guilty, and the punishments swept under the carpet.

Man City also manipulated the sponsorship rules by signing deals with companies owned by their owners. Man City are sponsored by Etihad who are owned by Sheik Mansoor.
Wolves do something similar with their sponsors. Silver Cross are owned by Fosun.

Good post Alex. Ffp has been sold as a means to protect smaller clubs. What in fact it does is to prevent clubs outside of the now established big boys from doing exactly what they have done, which is to get a wealthy owner and invest heavily to make a real challenge to the status quo. Fosun have the means to do a City or Chelsea, as do Newcastle now, but if we do, look out for the big stick of the FA. The question is will they punish Everton who have spent way beyond the limits?

I'ld be interested to see a detailed breakdown of the global revenue in terms of merchandise a club like City attracts. I think its fair to say they probably don't compete with Liverpool and certainly not United an issue Newcastle will likely face. How many years of success will it take to build a brand. Wolves global profile is still very much rooted in the success of the sides of the 50's in the same way United is anchored to Munich and Liverpool's 70's and 80's sides. Sky contracts expose all the top sides to a global audience but how does the lifetime affiliation develop in the modern game. Has a new generation of global Chelsea fans grown up as a result of the last 20 years? I'm not so sure I suspect liverpool and United are still attracting the majority of new global support despite City's recent success.

My question was Alex, and Jas has touched on the answer, where does the money come from, and continue to come from to both attract but more importantly pay these top players, to put these formerly 'not big clubs' where they now are.
Chelsea has just been sold for £4.25BN, think about that for a moment. Sorry but this ain't sport imo.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Everton. They have clearly overspent and must be lying about their pandemic losses as they are larger than any other clubs. I suspect some cooking of the books may occur to try to move losses to the stadium redevelopment.

LongmyndWolf I suspect a chunk of it now comes from regular Champions League football and prize monies, they're also bigger brands abroad now than they were. They both have larger grounds too, although in Chelsea's case not by much. There is also the sponsorship. Beyond that I'm not sure where the money comes from to stay on the right side of FFP. Both of these clubs got through before the rules changed, otherwise Liverpool, Utd, Arsenal and Spurs would probably be commercially the biggest clubs in the country.
A club is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it and 4 billion is a lot no doubt. Chelsea do own a lot of land in London and Cobham as far as I know which would carry a fair value.
You're right it isn't sport, but a giant cash cow at the expense of the fans. I wish tickets were more affordable and games on TV were more accessible. It annoys me that you can live outside the UK and more easily access PL football on TV. Proper football has very much become a toy for the rich.

They did Phil, once, it just all clicked that season while others were a bit on the back foot and rebuilding. Fair play to them they won it fair and square but couldn't repeat it and probably never will, because they aren't getting huge sums of money pumped in from, wherever.
