Bew- I get your point cause I've bemoaned how few players we sign for the under 23's actually make it into the first team but the problem is that is the name of the game in youth recruitment! Its all a numbers game, if you sign six 18/19 year old cbs you'll be lucky if one makes it! For every Marquez there's a Gomes Totti! There are many reasons why the biggest clubs bring through the best youngsters but one of the main reasons is simply because they find/sign SO many of um! When you break it down their ratios are probably worst than ours but the initial number on the intake (in terms of quality) is SO much higher that it just looks like they are doing much better!
Having said all that part of the problem is the need to out-manoeuvre these bigger clubs in those situations. When you see what happened with Marquinhos then (saddly) I fear we lack the back room team to truly compete these days. Let's hope I'm wrong eh ??

That is true. The intake of youth at bigger clubs is well . Bigger. It's just the way it is. You back every horse in the race you will win!
Also there is a financial element. As long as they go for more than it cost to sign and develop then it's job done. Most of the youth at City, United, Arsenal etc end up outside the prem.
I think the problem is we are in a sticky situation. We need better player to get European football but we need European football to attract those better players. Also we need to be realistic. We aren't as established in the prem era as most of the teams below us. Everton, West Ham, etc. They are all bigger names over the last 3 decades. We have had quite the rise and we are back. But it's going to take time and consistently being ripped as the ones there to break up the top 6 party. Maybe in a few seasons and another European qualification we can attract these players.
I fully believe if we had gotten Europe this season we'd have no problems with getting the players we want and tying down Neves. I think we'd have gotten in someone like Nunez which would be a sign of intent to Neves to say "look, Ruben, we really do want Champions League one day. One day soon!" . But that's all ifs and buts.
I want to be optimistic. I have fears but I want to believe we will sign at least 3 really good players and that one of them will be a player that is the heights of when we got Neves. As in a player we have no right signing. I mean I can dream that we somehow get Mbappe can't I?

Oh dear, that’s got to hurt Traore’s pride, from a mid-table team (doesn’t want to sign a new contract) to Barcelona (don’t want to sign him) and now the side that *barely* stayed in the league (delighted when they beat a nine man side 2-1).

Can't believe all this anti Adama stuff.Barcelona is his home town and recently was the world's top club so why on earth wouldn't he want to play for them particularly when players not fit to lace his boots at Molineux are earning more? I for one would have him over Hwang who flattered to deceive even more than Adama himself.

@Old Wulf, I’m not anti-Traore he was offered a new deal (going back to when Nuno was in charge) and he didn’t want to sign it. That’s why I used the Wolves / Barcelona / Leeds comparison.
So if he doesn’t want to be here, sell him and move on, I’m not saying that in the bitter sense, more of if he doesn’t want to be here, cash in.

Another way of looking at the wage situation is - what has Adama Traore produced on the pitch in the last 1.5 seasons (given he was at Barcelona for half of last season) to earn a wage increase?

Traore has had the contract offer on the table for 2 years. Of course he has the choice of whether he signs it or not, however from reading the media reports, he is currently on £48k per week and wants £150k per week. Over the last 2 years, he has done nothing to justify the club tripling his wages.
If he doesn't sign, then let him run down his contract and move him on but if we can move him on then do. There is clearly an issue with the player himself because I'm sure he agreed to take a wage cut to join his boyhood club on loan and I'm sure this was to be carried over if he signed on a permanent basis. The fact that Barcelona won't pay him £40k per week shows that he will struggle to get his asking wage.

Forgetting the manager puzzle, according to the E&S Everton can buy Coady for 4.5 mill. Makes you think they haven't got a clue what they are doing at Wolves. They pay silly fees for some of their purchase and prepared to practically give away a top player like Coady for peanuts. Virtually any club in the Premier would have him just for his influence and leadership. On the manager front I think it's time to move away from the dependence on Portugese mmanagement.

Excuse me if I've got things wrong Ed, but wasn't the Brighton game cancelled initially due to rail strike and accessibility? I personally think we should go ahead v man city. A minutes silence and then 30+ thousand singing the national anthem 'God save the king' would be a fitting continuity. However I respect this won't be everybody's view.
