Various reports saying we are in advanced talks to sigh Patrik Mercado a player Chelsea were looking at.

Would be a shrewd move and cheap as he's in the last 12 months of his contract. Almost certainly spell the end for Doyle and Traore though.

Looks like a decent prospect.
However he is highly unlikely to hit the ground running.
Still fairly young and playing at a very low level, Liga Pro, the top division in Ecuador is of a similar level to Norwegian or Hungarian football, i.e. massively below even the English Championship!
Thus unless he is a standout/prodigy in this league, and with only 1 senior cap for Ecuador by the age of 22 he doesn't sound like one, he should, as you say Molineux, be v cheap. However he probably should only be viewed as a prospect/one for the future/squad player and is highly unlikely to be the first 11 starter in the creative midfield/10 role the team needed in August let alone this January.
All in all no worries re taking this player - although of course it means someone has to go out due to NHG limits - but I would be surprised if he is seen as the missing piece that so obviously exists in the first 11

I would hope that the club are scouting young players with potential irrespective of who is in the managers chair. If they can then force themselves into the 1st team squad great.

Yes I like bringing in young ones with abilities and ones that will gain in value.

Seems like another player for the future. FOSUN will have buy top-quality if we’re to have any chance of staying up.

What chances have our existing young ones got of getting into the 1st team? I mean what REAL incentive is there?

BosWolf, I would expect an overwhelming majority will not, but that said the academy is run as a separate entity to make a profit and most players at 21 will move on and find their level in the UK or abroad. How we compare to other clubs I don't know but it seems no golden generation has come out of anywhere for about 30 years now.

Thanks Arddunby1. It’s a real shame but a missed opportunity I think. How hungry and loyal our boys would be given half a chance. Once one or two break through into the 1st team others would have something realistic to aim for. Oh well!

Boswolf I think it's just so much more difficult now, unless a youngster is showing international potential as a teenager they will struggle to get into a Premier league academy. The Premier league at the top is now a collection of Englush clubs that largely field international select XI's, you need to be England material to make it to those teams. The bottom clubs are largely made up of players hoping to make it to those top clubs. Sad but true, the days of the old first division and making it good as a local lad are now few and far between. I would say only if you're as good as Gascoigne or Rooney as a 17 year old would you have a pathway that is obvious and that would only be in a top club where they can get game time from the bench at 3 0 up without excess pressure.
