It has been reported that Wolves very nearly signed Gareth Bale from Spurs. Two other players who were on the verge of signing for Wolves in the Seventies, were Michel Platini and Peter Reid.

I remember when Wolves signed Derek Dougan in the sixties. Joe Baker and Geoff Strong were also linked.

As I recall it would have been in August 1979 and Platini failed a medical so we signed a little very tricky winger Thomas from QPR (for big money!) instead.
Sadly after only a few games at Wolves Thomas suffered a career ending injury.
Platini went on to be a genuine world class player, probably for a time the best in the world, at the start of the 80s.
If and but the greatest players ever to play the game!
Even today watching Ivan Toney you can't help but thnk how good a Callum Wilson/Ivan Toney partnership could be and both played relatively recently in the lower leagues at Coventry and Peterborough and clearly were both "available"!
We bought, (ex Wolves player), Leon Clarke instead!

Another winger we signed a few years before Dave Thomas, was another England winger Mike O'Grady, who replaced Terry Wharton.

Wolves have had some great wingers. One of the best was David Wagstaffe. Waggy kept two other decent wingers out of the first team in the sixties. Paddy Buckley and Bertie Lutton

Toney more or less agree to join us but then Newcastle gazumped us. I remember in 1994, Ronny Johnsen failed his medical with us. A year later he joined Man Utd and in 1999 won the treble.

Lost city. I met a Swedish international who played for Malmo in the European Cup final when they were beaten by Notts Forest. I asked him who was the best player he ever played against and he said Michel Platini. That would have been some signing.
