Reasons to be cheerful ( tks Ian Dury)
If you compare where the first 11 is now to where it was last season.
Sa replaces the aging Patrcio
Semedo is over his troubled start and looks solid compared to the struggling player we saw particualrly in the early part of last year
Marcal is fit (and RAN has also got 6 months under his belt and is transformed form the young lad we saw flailing in the water in the first half of last year) {Otto will also return at some point? ]
Boly has had a summer to recover from the effects of injuries and CV which obviously impacted him so badly last year
Coady has had the benefit of an international tournament to develop him as a player and man
Neves is certainly no weaker
Yes Moutinho still needs replacing but surely that is the prioriity over the next 2 to 3 weeks.
Trincao is a real prospect to cover Neto until he is fit which we didn't have last year. [Neto and Podence will be back at some stage as well]
Silva must be better for a summer's trainning (hoefully he is much fitter and stronger) plus the half season of experience he gained in his baptisim of fire last year must improve him surely.
Jimenez is back!
and we still have Traore.
Other than Moutinho isn't it fair to say we are looking better than we were at the nadir last year?

Looking in good shape, and having the fans back in grounds will help as well. I'd be very surprised if at least two more for the first team (CB, MF) don't arrive before the window shuts, even if they are loan to buys rather than an out and out deal this summer. They might not be players currently in the premier league, or even players we've heard of, but I think someone will come through the door now players are returning from internationals and holidays and transfers start being agreed at other clubs.

I agree. We don't look any weaker. I didn't see the game against Crewe but from what I've read, Lage played a 442 attacking formation. These first few games are simply to build up the match fitness of the players who ended their season in May. Anyone who played in June will be a bit sharper.

I like what you say but maybe a bit too much optism or have I got a dose of Nunoitis.

Wittonian - Too much optimism! Oh my I will be ruining my reputation as the uber bear and getting a christmas card from Jeff!
Seriously though I am going to post another post comparing the current first 11 to its counterparty as at the end of 2019/ 20 later on. that's not such a positive read sadly.
But I do beleive we are def on the right track though after last year's debacle.
Personaly I think there is still a lot to be done (the current side is better than the nadir of last year but that won't be enough to return us to top 7 or potentially, depending on how Trincao and Jimenez for different reasons hit the ground, ssibly even close to it ) but hard to be critical of what has been done so far and with Boly and Jimenez back we are much stronger.
In my view our best players, if all fit, in order are Traore, Neto, Jimenez, Boly, Otto, Podence, Neves and Semdedo ( one way only! ) . {IT WOULD BE INTERSTING TO HEAR OTHERS LIST IN ORDER? ]
At times last year only Traore, Neves and Semedo were fully fit.
It therefore must be better as the missing players from last year get fitter, the new players, (Trincao and Sa) bed in and the other younger players {RAN, Silva, Kilman, MGW, Owen etc ) will be stronger for the experinece gained last year.
Ps Coady would be next on the list so sorry to him but the list was long already - showing what good players we have!?

Considering we are getting a pre season which we lacked last year we are certainty no worse and possibly better. Trincao looks a good player and whilst I liked Rui I think Sa may prove better for us. By that I mean command the box more and come for crosses basically a different type of keeper. Hopefully we get the players we need then its the easy bit. Beat everyone!

The lack of pre-season was a big deal last year Ken (IMO) . Most weeks we were playing twice due to the later start which took a toll on a smaller weaker squad carrying injuries. That said the younger players from last season should have a little more experience and even though we do still have many young squad players hopefully last seasons youngsters (Silva, Hoever, RAN and co) will show an improvement this time out enabling the squad to be less reliant on raw U23's making their initial step up to the first team.

Agree ken.
Much prefer a goalie who comes out for the ball. Takes some of the pressure off the defence for set pieces etc.

18 Jul 2021 14:19:52
Also one who doesn't keep being beaten at the near post! (Picky I know)

With what I saw yesterday I am not impressed, I know some players are missing and it is early season but I feel we need to strengthen the squad with experienced players. There are to many players who pass backwards as there first thought when a lot of the time they could turn and attack and the under 23s are the worst.

Not picky Ken.
Happened to often.

We'll all see when the season starts,
We have new manager the crowds are back, constant rumours of players leaving and players brought its still too early to have a good accurate assessment of how our season Will go but you would like to think we will have a good season at this stage.

18 Jul 2021 18:57:09
Might be the Nuno tactics will take time to get out of their systems baza.

Some great posts above. I'm very optimistic for the new season. I do think we'll lose either neves or traore but that will be a means to an end with good replacements coming in. We've got a difficult start but sometimes that can be a good thing. Wolves 40/ 1 to finish top 4. Villa 18/ 1 and Brighton 33/ 1. I know where I'd rather put my few quid. We're an unknown quantity this season and I think we could surprise a few people. I was going to add a little negative on the end there to cover myself but thought no, sod it. Wolves top 4.
