Nelson Semedo shows us at international level that he has no interest in cutting out crosses or shots. He has the unique style of contorting his body to avoid contact with the ball. He cannot be our No 1 right back and we must cut our losses on this guy this summer.

Spot on NES.
Leaves his man SO much space.

Agree NES. Semedo has no defensive appetite.

It just goes to show how little Benfica, Barcelona, Wolves and Fernando Santos know about football.

It seemed to me that the wing back did not track back, and Semedo went narrow leaving the German opposing wing back space to cross on 2 occasions. There is a possible flaw in Portugal set up, because if Semedo had stayed wide, the gap would have been in the centre. One for the tactician.

Ok Jas, point taken.

It is one for the tacticians but you make setting your tactics so much more difficult where you’re having to provide cover to shield an obvious flaw in a key piece of your defence. Rumour has it that we’re looking at the Rangers left back. If he’s any good I’d switch Johnny to right back when fit. In my book Hoever in one match at Old Trafford showed more defensively than Semedo did in the whole season and will be the answer to that question in the long run.
Semedo has improved over the last few months but these recurring frailties will continually find him out in the Premier League.

Not particularly a Semedo fan, but I felt he was let down last night.
He constantly had to come in to cover forward runs through the centre from German players and that left the wing completely exposed, which the Germans exploited very well.
Thought the Portuguese lack of tactical management made an "average" German side look better than they are.

I thought the Germans were excellent a lot above average but that's just my opinion.
Semedo was caught wanting at times whether that is down to the Germans playing well or the coaching and game plan from the Portuguese manager or semedo not good enough.
The debate on semedo is understandable imo.
Ronaldo goal was brilliant world class like no other player how Ronaldo headed the corner clear and sprinted the length of the pitch his awareness his physical fitness at his age was just breath taking.

Would we take Ronaldo at the age of 36?
You bet we would and he'd play every game.
Moutinho is 35 I think, surely for his experience alone he's worth keeping for the last year of his contract, even if he only sits on the bench and can come on for the last 15 of a game. Why are we considering letting that knowledge go?

I have no spite against Semedo and I want him to succeed as much as the rest of you. But why does he back off more often than try to keep tight to a winger or wing back and why does he always try to get out of the way of crosses and shots rather than block? Over Nuno’s tenure I never felt we had the best defenders and I always worried about the zonal set up. But what you could say was that our guys would put their bodies on the line and block everything they could (typified by Doherty and Johnny on the flanks) . Not always pretty but it was effective and we built a reputation for being tight defensively. My hope is that Lage and his team will fix this problem or move him on quickly.
Also as our marquee experienced signing last summer why aren’t we seeing reports that NES will return to sign Semedo in his next role? We shouldn’t focus on selling our Crown Jewels but more on fixing what isn’t working in the squad.

Bigcheese68, think he'd be a luxury spectator on-allegedly- £100k a week.
