And so it begins.

I work just around the corner from Villa Park and with a fair few Villa fans.

They are adamant that he is going to lead them to glory as he was such a great player.

I've reminded them that not all great players make great managers such as: Maradona, Pirlo, Keane, Ince, Scholes, Neville, Zola etc but for now I'll let them have their day in the sun.

Have a look at Villa’s next five fixtures. This will literally be the acid test for SG. A part of me wants him to succeed though, he was the consummate pro at Liverpool.

But I agree with your comment above about great players not making the transition to great managers. In fact average and less than average players seem to make better managers. That list is even longer.

He'll be good for the foreign players in the team where like him English is a second language!

You have my sympathy Jas working with that lot. They will be in full delusional overload that's for sure. Top 4 this season, win the League next, then the European Cup to follow.
But Gerrard is untested at this level and has Championship players throughout his squad, so we'll see.

Struggling to remember an old firm manager who has been hugely succesful in England. Stein, Mcghee, Lennon and Mcneil didn't set the world alight probably Walter Smith and maybe Souness were the most successful but not prolific. Ferguson of course managed Aberdeen and broke the duopoly for a few years.

I think Gerrard is in for a huge wake up call tbh massive difference between the English premier league and Scottish premier league.
Apart from the big two in Scotland the Scottish premier is on same level as league 1.

As we know, great players rarely make great managers. Glen Hoddle is just one example. My theory is that a great player who has become a manager is always dealing with players who are not as talented as he was. This makes it harder to coach and motivate the players as he probably doesn't understand their limitations.

One of our own falls into the great players not cutting it as a manager. Billy Wright at Ardenal. Think my memories are right.

I think you're correct Ron, many of Englands best didn't cut it as managers, not least Bobby's Charlton and Moore.
