Finally 20 mins or so to go Nuno goes 4231 the formation i've been stating for a long time and we looked so much better.
I'm not going to knock any players it was a strange night first time in a very long time we'd gone 433 so players not used to it.
4231 could be the way forward but end of the day Nuno is the one who sees the players day in day out and he knows a lot more about the game than me.

Completely agree Rated, 4231 was a revelation! Still think Ait Nouri is a little lightweight to be LB, possibly keep him for when we play LWB and Marcal take the LB role. A game that after our second half performance we should have taken all 3 points, but nevermind hopefully Nuno learnt some things today and is ready for the Arsenal next.

Doesn't matter what system you play if you don't put the chances you make away you don't win matches! We had enough tonight to win sadly we didn't. Another time they go in, you can pick out individual mistakes but we win lose or draw as a team. Playing a different system all things considered we were ok, not great but ok. At times we looked very good maybe we could be getting it right. Let's hope so. COYW.

Rated - you are correct we looked great for last twenty mins and def should have won the game!
However Southampton seemed to have blown themselves out and were hanging on at the end but better sides might take advantage of the weakness in that system.
For example whilst the 3,1 would be great. Neto is the best finisher by far and prob has to play, Podence is the most creative and prob has to play (but is an awful finisher - see MC game for further examples! ) and Traore is a marmite player who on his day is (as he was 2nd half tonight) the game changer. But sadly unless he turns up more regularly than he has of late he probably is the one who ha to be sacrificed. {and I'm a big big fan! }
How about the 4, 2?
Neves ( although he seems 2 to 3 yards slower on and off the ball than in the past) and Dendonker have to be the 2 and even with Moutinho in there as well tonight we were over run by a physical Southampton side in the first half
and the 4
Tonight we looked poor in the first half with a back 4
The FBs are both good going forwards but are weak defensively and the 2 CBs didn't work - too much space between them and didn't keep a line leading to balls being threaded through channels {I.

Pressed send by mistake - was saying that in Rugby we call it a dog leg defence and is a huge no no.
Boly and Kilman didn't work well together - need Coady's leadership, organisation and covering
So wacky idea
3 3 3 1

as per before with front 3,1

but play 3cb at back then two wbs and a sweeper - Neves - in front of the 3CBs
It will make us narrow defensively, unless RAN and Seemedo can improve, but surely if we make the chances we did tonight we must score 3 or 4 a week so can afford to concede the odd one here and there?

I thought mouthino was our best midfielder last night.
Traore had 2 at minimum players around him.
Jimenez was out the game first half think we need to keep Jimenez in the game more.
His quality for our goal along with mouthino pass to him is what we need more off.
All in all a lot more positives to take from last night's game.

Good comments guys, a lot more positives, created enough chances to win the game. Good to see Moutinho and Traore get 90 minutes and they probably did enough to start next Sunday. Coady’ play and organisation skills were sorely missed and mistakes were made but overall a better watch than of late.

Agreed the 2nd half and certainly the last 25 we were superb
But defensively we were very poor - S.

Southampton should have scored 4 and whilst we should have scored several more than that we only scored 1
Positives but lots of worries- 2 points dropped at home to a team that in all honesty will only finish mid table is simply not good enough.
We sadly are looking mid table ourselves at very best and probably need to up our game consistently ( AND SCORE THE SITTTERS! ) to avoid being lower mid or worse
Fortunately this year the bottom 4 or 5 look really awful so no worries on that score but it is not a good season so far!

Semedo for me at 36 million is poor no wonder Barcalona got rid, We can all talk all day put we just have not got the player to make a difference, plenty of young expensive ones who are not ready.

Looking back I suppose the arrival of Podense was beginning of the end for Jota sitting on the bench, Yes Jota lost a bit of form but being on the bench was probably the reason he wanted to move. Its all water under the bridge now.

Yellowstone - cf Doherty at £13m we got our eyes gouged out!
But as you say its water under the bridge now and if Semedo is played at RWB NOT RB then he is promising.
He is quick and is skilful but clearly - and not surprisingly since he was at Barcelona - he is not a solid defensive RB.
When do Barcelona have to defend or even care about it- they simply dominate game in game out and so Seemedo was always on the front foot.
To be fair if we play the 3 CB 2dm route that will largely be his job here so I'm still hopeful he can contribute - and indeed apart from falling asleep for the goal he was good last night.
Just a shame that his error was so important and cost us so much.

Spot on Yellowstone, Semedo has struggled to come to terms with the Prem and has been caught out on numerous occasions the Saints goal for one. Does anyone know why Doc was allowed to leave? was it because the Semedo deal was on the table . I know it’s water under the bridge but I think Doc is far better than Semedo he had a great understanding with Coady a great engine and scored some vital goals for us, 16 in the last 4 seasons, Also Semedo cost 3 times what we had for Doc, sorry to harp on had to get it off my chest!

Hi Taff, Think Docherty was on a lot less money than some other team members, and at 29 yrs old and his Agent's input the Spurs offer was to good to refuse, Although we sold him cheaply in my opinion having seen his the replacement.
